When we got our hands on a very special Michael Brecker - Guardala mouthpiece, we were very impressed by its ease of play, powerful resonance, and super wide range. It was an amazing and inspirational moment for sure!
Through painstaking research, accumulative knowledge within the industry, and significant evaluations we are indeed convinced that this special piece was of the same design and vintage as one of the mouthpieces Michael Brecker used and cherished through much of his career.
We were so impressed by its sound and ease that we emphatically decided to make a BEHN version - but we'd do it different, we'd do something that isn't just a copy! Yes it'd be similar, however yes if we were to set out to do something, our guiding principal is to always improve, to always add , to innovate, and to...yes, make it better!
We were determined to make a mouthpiece that would provide the same two essential ingredients of that splendid powerhouse mouthpiece of the 20th century.
Ingredient 1: It's got to be EASY!
Ingredient 2: It's got to sound INSPIRATIONAL!
and...
Bonus ingredient 3: We'd IMPROVE upon the classic MB-G mouthpiece!
But how would we improve upon such a great classic?
We have the material - BEHN ROD RUBBER. Our amazingly resonant rubber is the world's ONLY faithful reproduction of the finest rubber ever produced within the mouthpiece industry. This is where you benefit from our history in the clarinet field. More than twenty years ago we successfully cracked the code, the Holy Grail of rubber, we authentically recreated the amazing rich sounding and responsive rubber the world of mouthpieces has experienced. The French Rod Rubber of the 1920s is widely respected as the best sounding material ever used in mouthpieces, and we at BEHN (in the year 2005) successfully recreated that amazing rubber. BEHN Proprietary Rod Rubber became the core of our business. Additionally, we then endeavored to recreate the amazing resonance of that amazing but very expensive rubber in a modern way which cuts the costs down - and behold, BEHN Rubber II was born. Two great sounding rod rubber materials, ONLY available at BEHN, and yes both of these material options are available choices in the TITAN lineup. Let our manufacturing history on the Clarinet side of the industry benefit your artistry. At BEHN, with the TITAN you get the amazing resonance that only our rod rubber material can provide.
Behn Proprietary Rod Rubber (AKA BEHN Golden Era Rod Rubber) is simply the best. And Behn Rubber II is the best of the rest. Two great choices - just let your budget decide. You'll be amazed either way.
But what about metal? The MB mouthpieces were metal! Well that's not our jam! And no we didn't want to just make a copy, we wanted to make a better mouthpiece! BEHN rubbers sound warmer and richer, they create more body of sound, which is much more complex with overtones, not just bright edgy like metal, but with our special rubbers you'll experience a deep and full body of sound which is super resonant. That means that yes you will experience ALL of the sound components of the original MB mouthpieces, but with TITAN, you'll ADD body, warmth, depth, and an amazing amalgam of colors and flexibility - which your artistry will quickly learn to enjoy!
But first, some more research was in order. Yes we'd make the TITAN out of our amazing rubber, but we wanted to explore our design options too. And in that exploration, we discovered that TITAN was so resonant that it readily accommodated a variety of chamber configurations.
Additionally, to get the same kinda wow, the same super fast and nimble handling that Brecker and the Guardala mouthpieces are known for, we innovated by streamlining the body shape of the TITAN. We made TITAN a slim bodied mouthpiece - not as skinny as metal, but much slimmer than other standard rubber tenor pieces. This enhances the added power, resonance, and ease that our rubber is already loved for. And there's no need to find a specially made ligature; TITAN works great with standard alto ligatures, allowing you to custom curate your sound from your ligature selection.
Okay so what about the design? You may be thinking that at this point we were making nothing like the original inspirational Guardala. Well actually what we were doing was to carefully sculpt our body design to enhance the power of our rubber materials, all the while remaining fixed on the prized sound and ease of play of that special reference piece. In that process, with only very slight baffle geometry (to stay true to our sonic purpose) we did indeed remain faithful to that original MB Guardala chamber concept: Long chamber, long baffle step which at the midway point angles down to the bore. But that's not all. Our rubber is so accommodating, and our streamlined chassis is so resonant, that we developed two more designs to offer a wider variety of choice. TITAN is now available in three discrete chamber designs.
So to sum it up, with the BEST rubber comes the BEST sound; so by employing BEHN Rubber to the task of enhancing the sound, and also doing slight design tweaks to remain true to our inspiration, we were able to not only make a great Tribute Mouthpiece, but in our opinion we surpassed the original! And from TITAN's nominal chassis design, we were able to cultivate two more models, to broaden selection.
BEHN Pure Vibe TITAN Tenor mouthpieces are available in three discrete chamber versions.
Model 1: This our MB Tribute Mouthpiece design. If features a long step baffle which at the mid point of the chamber angles downward to meet the bore. The chamber is VERY long, the window is also longer and a tad wider. Rails are narrow. All of that makes for a super easy playing, free blowing and rich sounding mouthpiece. This model is very flexible, and offers a wide field of options - if you have only one mouthpiece, this is a great option because it is so versatile. It's got a lot of color in its sound, allowing you to subtone or to resonate with a super core - at will, you can turn on a dime as it is a very nimble, quick handling mouthpiece. Made from our very special BEHN Proprietary Rod Rubber, you get the most resonant rubber available; it offers more sonic energy, and an amazing indescribable array of colors.
Model 2: similar to Model 1 however the bore is cut deeper into the chamber. The back baffle is steeper leading to the cavernous end-bore. This slightly darkens the sound and adds a touch more depth and working-resistance. Made from our very rich sounding BEHN Rubber II.
Model 3: has a similar long-bore concept of Model 2, however the baffle is arced from tip to the bore with a gentle and uniform convex contour. This baffle shape provides more depth, richness and warmth. It is the darkest of the three TITANS. Made from our very rich sounding BEHN Rubber II.
BEHN™ TITAN Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
Titan mouthpieces are super streamlined - while not as tiny as many metal mouthpieces, we opted to make a slim chassis that not only brings out our rubber's resonance to MAX potential, but it'll work with commonly available ligatures. Just use your favorite Alto ligature - OR get a BEHN Ligature when you order - that's the best way to experience the fullness of our concept.
